About

About Eastern Investment

Eastern Investments Limited (EIL) is a government company and a non-banking finance company (NBFC). Its main activity is holding and managing investments in shares. Its registered office is in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. The annual report calls the company a Government of India enterprise. EIL is the holding company of two businesses: The Orissa Minerals Development Company Limited (OMDC) and The Bisra Stone Lime Company Limited (BSLC). These came to EIL under a restructuring scheme approved by the Union Cabinet. EIL itself does not run mines or plants. Its own income comes mainly from dividends on its shares in these companies and interest on bank term deposits. The company is controlled by Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), which holds 736638 shares, or 51.00%. The President of India holds 15.79% and Life Insurance Corporation of India holds 5.43%. As on 31 March 2025 the company had 1444387 equity shares of ₹10 each, held by 1462 shareholders. On a standalone basis, revenue from operations was ₹57.24 lakh in FY25 and the company made a net loss of ₹28.91 lakh. Total income was ₹44.27 lakh, after other income turned negative because of a fall in the market value of invested shares. Net worth was ₹26,691.08 lakh, mostly the value of its investments in subsidiaries. The group is far bigger than the parent alone. On a consolidated basis, revenue from operations was ₹12,867.41 lakh in FY25 against ₹17163.46 lakh a year earlier, and the group posted a loss after tax of ₹3,518.39 lakh. IPO Guru has no IPO filing on record for this company. Its shares are dealt off-market through dealers, and the prices quoted there are only indicative, not a firm offer. IPO Guru shows an indicative price of ₹2999 with a lot of 100 shares. This is not a recommendation.

Strengths

  • Backed by government-owned Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, which holds 51.00% (736638 shares), and the President of India holds another 15.79%.
  • Net worth was ₹26,691.08 lakh at 31 March 2025 against total liabilities of only ₹322.69 lakh, and the standalone balance sheet shows no borrowings.
  • Holds controlling stakes in OMDC and BSLC. The investments in subsidiaries are carried at ₹25,863.51 lakh, which is most of the company's total assets of ₹27,013.77 lakh.
  • The annual report states that BSLC has permission from the environment ministry to raise production from 0.96 MTPA to 5.26 MTPA.
  • The share count has been unchanged at 1444387 for FY24 and FY25, so there has been no dilution in the period.

Risks

  • Standalone revenue from operations is small at ₹57.24 lakh in FY25, and the company reported a net loss of ₹28.91 lakh against a profit of ₹2.10 lakh in FY24.
  • Income depends mainly on dividends from OMDC and BSLC. The company did not declare any dividend for FY25 because it made no cash profit.
  • The consolidated group lost ₹3,518.39 lakh after tax in FY25 against a profit of ₹592.46 lakh in FY24, and consolidated revenue from operations fell from ₹17163.46 lakh to ₹12,867.41 lakh.
  • The annual report says future growth depends on the opening of OMDC mines, so the outlook is tied to mining lease renewals.
  • As an NBFC the company says it cannot raise equity from the market, which limits how it can fund growth.
  • The secretarial auditor noted that the board does not have the required number of independent directors. Management says appointments are in the hands of the Government of India.
  • Other income was negative ₹12.97 lakh in FY25 because of a fall in the market value of invested shares, so profit swings with share prices.
  • Free float is thin. Government companies hold 52.76% and the central and state governments hold 15.92%, so very few shares are available to trade and prices can move sharply.
  • Unlisted prices are indicative and set by dealers, with no exchange price discovery.
