The Hero Motors anchor lock-in ends on 21 October 2026, when half of the shares held by its 24 anchor investors become free to trade. The anchors put in ₹299.98 crore at the issue price of ₹84, and the stock was at ₹149.24 in our records on 19 October.
What is ending on 21 October?
Anchor investors are large institutions that buy before an IPO opens. Their shares are locked in so they cannot sell at once. For Hero Motors, the first lock-in is 30 days from allotment on 21 September, and it covers 50% of the anchor shares.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Anchor money | ₹299.98 crore from 24 anchors |
| Anchor price | ₹84 a share (the issue price) |
| Shares unlocking on 21 October | about 1.79 crore (50% of the anchor shares) |
| Remaining half unlocks | 20 December 2026 (90 days from allotment) |
| Price in our records, 19 October | ₹149.24 |
The share count is our arithmetic: ₹299.98 crore divided by ₹84 is about 3.57 crore shares, and half of that is about 1.79 crore.
What is an anchor lock-in, and why does it matter?
Before an IPO opens to the public, the company can allot shares to a small group of large institutions at the issue price. These are the anchor investors. The rule that locks their shares for 30 and then 90 days exists so that the first weeks of trading are not dominated by sudden selling from the biggest holders. When a lock-in ends, more shares can reach the market, which is why traders watch the date. The anchors here were allotted shares on 21 September, two days before listing on 23 September.
Hero Motors raised ₹1,000 crore in total, a mix of fresh capital and an offer for sale, with ICICI Securities, Dam Capital and JM Financial as lead managers. The anchor book was therefore about 30% of the issue.
Where is the price against the anchor price?
The anchors paid ₹84. At ₹149.24, the stock is 77.67% above that. The shares opened at ₹82 on 23 September, 2.38% below the issue price, after the grey market had been quoting a discount of ₹2 to ₹3 through the weekend.
Free to trade does not mean the anchors will sell. It only means they can. Some hold for months.
